On track for Champion Australian First Season Sire honours, Home Affairs had one runner on Monday and the Chris Waller trained filly Miss Scandal saluted at Canterbury to become the 12th winner for her sire.
Miss Scandal has always shown nice ability at the trials, but in two previous race starts had not been able to execute as well as hoped for, but with a positive ride from Tyler Schiller she was a woman on a mission.
With a cosy barrier and no obvious speed in the race, she powered forward to lead and gave a good kick off the turn before holding off a late challenge from her stablemate Satin Serenade to win the 1250m maiden by a head.
Both fillies did a great job and the runner-up is a well bred filly champion sire Frankel, that will also be one to keep a close watch on going forward.
“The second filly got a little bit lost on the corner there and the other filly skipped away,” said stable representative Darren Beadman.
“What I was taken with by the winner was the way that she was just able to control the race in front and not overdo it
“Probably the 1250m was going to be the question mark and when Tyler let slip a little bit early, I thought, ‘Oh, she might be a little bit vulnerable,’ which she was, so it was a deserving win because she did take up the running and made them all work for it.”
Miss Scandal was a $320,000 Karaka Book 1 purchase from Westbury Stud for Mulcaster Bloodstock Ltd / Chris Waller Racing and runs in the colours of the Ritchie family, who have enjoyed G1 success this season with the Waller trained glamour colt Autumn Boy.
Home Affairs was trained throughout his career by Chris Waller and Miss Scandal is the first winner he has prepared by the champion son of I Am Invincible.
Bred by Gerry Harvey, Miss Scandal is the third winner from four foals to race from Kylie’s Fame, a metro winning half-sister by More Than Ready (USA) to stakes-winner Madeenaty from Group II winner Set for Fame.
Kylie’s Fame was covered by another young son of I Am Invincible last spring in Hawaii Five Oh, so will produce a three-quarter sibling to Miss Scandal this year.
Coolmore based Home Affairs has earned a big fee increase for this spring and is priced at $176,000.
