There have been comparisons made to Hall Of Famer Winx, and the Chris Waller-conditioned Autumn Glow has continued her winning run taking out the $10,000,000 Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick in fine fashion.
The victory takes her tally to eight straight to start the career, as she proved too strong by a length and a quarter at the finish for Victorian raider Sepals. Evaporate hit the line strongly for third a further long neck away.
After not riding her in the past two starts due to interstate commitments, jockey James McDonald reunited with his star mare and gave her a peach of a ride three-wide with cover throughout the 1500m affair, before letting down with a withering burst.
Waller was surprised that the race wasn’t at the elite status, given the strength of the field and international interest.
“This race is gaining momentum, I actually thought it was a group one race,” Waller said.
“The ratings it rates every year is quite special.
“It’s a race that’s held on the world stage, a high benchmark, and that’s why we decided to run her here.”
McDonald was in awe of his four-year-old mare and believes she hadn’t yet hit her peak.
“She gives me that ooh-la-la feeling. I’d love to see her in a Cox Plate,” McDonald said.
“I don’t think we’ve seen the best version of her yet either, we’re so lucky to have her.
“She was out on her feet and she just keeps finding, she is fair dinkum.
“She knew she was in a race today and it was all due to the heavy ground, it was very testing out there for her.”
When asked if he had made comparisons to his former star Winx who famously won 33 races in a row, Waller was quick to dismiss any talk.
“No chance,” Waller said.
“I don’t care if she gets beaten, she’s a star in herself and the sequence is irrelevant.”
