The latest Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings have been unveiled and star Australian sprinter Nature Strip is at the top of the tree, an accolade that holds significance for his trainer Chris Waller.
The rankings, which cover all performances between January 1 and May 9 this year, had Nature Strip the highest ranked horse in the world on 123, ahead of internationals Mishriff and Mystic Guide on 122.
Waller has trained the world’s best horse before thanks to the deeds of the incomparable Winx, so he knows how difficult the feat is to achieve.
“You don’t think much of ratings until you have been there,” Waller said.
“It’s a massive acknowledgement as the rest of the world do take notice of the ratings.
“It’s our chance to compete on what is supposed to be a fair scale. So to have Nature Strip up there is very good.”
With the bulk of the top races in Europe yet to be run, Waller knows Nature’s Strip’s position is likely temporary.
But having locked in the dual T J Smith Stakes winner for the stable’s slot in the $15 million Everest in October, he believes the gelding still has plenty to offer.
“There are a few horses who will come out over Royal Ascot,” Waller said.
“But he returns in the spring and who knows, he might even go a higher (rating).”
