Flemington’s loss was Chris Waller’s gain as it’s unlikely any jockey other than Jim Cassidy would have been able to lift Amovatio ($2.70) across the line in the 1600m race at Randwick yesterday.
The Waller-trained bay was last and awkwardly placed on the fence in a muddling-run event.
To make matters worse, Amovatio was held up for a run at the top of the straight before Cassidy found a way through and threw everything at the horse to deny the well-backed Mr One Eleven ($4.20) with early leader Timeless Prince ($6) a close third.
“I was in a pretty awkward spot coming to the 700m and I had a slow one outside me and Amovatio sort of half ‘lock-jawed’, and he wouldn’t come back so I had to take a couple of inches off his teeth,’’ he said.
“They quickened off the front and it made it hard for me to get going and I was getting held up but he got there, that was the main thing.’’
