Chris Waller’s remarkable strike rate this season sits him alongside the legends of the turf but it is not just his winners that punters should be noting.

Waller has had 206 starters in NSW for the term, 145 of them have arrived home in the first five, 46 winning, but it has been his ability to convert potential into success, which is incredible. It has been a strength of Waller’s method that horses step up with each preparation and his four-year-old group this year is another testament to his ability. There have been great runs for trainers in the past but the prolonged effort by Waller stands out above all others. A snapshot of the past 10 days, Waller had a dozen winners, 11 of which were at black-type level.

Everyone can marvel at his winners, George Main Stakes winner Kermadec stands out as possibly the star of the spring, but it is the beaten brigade where clues to the future were on Saturday.

Preferment was super tough in winning the Hill Stakes, but the rest of Waller’s team in that race could all be winning before the end of the spring. If they do it would see Waller dominate the stayer events in Sydney and Melbourne.

What was the best run between Beaten Up, Who Shot Thebarman and Grand Marshal is a great pub debate, but all three given the right circumstances will be winning a race between now and November.
