Winx wowed Rosehill for the final time when she won her fourth Group 1 George Ryder Stakes in a style to which we are all so accustomed but which we will see just one more time.
In three weeks, Winx will have her finale in the $4 million G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick and judging on the emotion which greeted the finish of her penultimate race, it will be a teary farewell.
Starting the $1.05 favourite, Winx’s rapidly-widening margin on the line was three-and-a-half lengths over the three-year-old colt Brutal ($26), who stepped up to his Group 1 assignment with a brilliant burst of speed after turning for home before being consumed by the unstoppable mare.
Third was Dreamforce ($21) three lengths further away.
Winx’s 32nd victory in a row was also her 24th Group 1 success and it came after jockey Hugh Bowman gave her a wide run over the 1500-metre course, allowing her to finish the race as she always does by powering away to win.
A clearly emotional Bowman later told Channel Seven that because of the Heavy conditions he was happy to sit wide and ‘rode her like a piece of trackwork’ although conceding he had to get busy over the final 300m.
Trainer Chris Waller again fought back tears as he tried to find another way to explain the magic that has led to her extraordinary record and earnings of $23.5m.
As well as winning four George Ryders, Winx has also won four Cox Plates and four Chipping Norton Stakes. – Racing.com
