Champion trainer Chris Waller has made the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) his own in recent times, and he added a sixth victory in the race, and third-straight, at Flemington on Saturday when the lightly raced The Roaring Sun stormed home to upstage his stablemate and race favourite Unhinged.

The Roaring Sun was well-supported, jumping at $6.50 after opening at $9, and thanks to a lovely and patient ride by Damian Lane, the colt by The Autumn Sun broke his maiden tag at the third time of asking.

Waller’s assistant trainer, Charlie Duckworth, said the Carbine Club Stakes had been a long-term plan for The Roaring Sun.

“Absolutely. Right from his two-year-old campaign, we tried to get him to a JJ Atkins. That’s sort of the quality of horse we thought he was. He had a setback, so he had to go out and spell, so we told the boys we were going to aim at the Carbine Club; this is in May, so six months in the making and you think, ‘Oh you get beaten at the provincials (first up)’,” Duckworth said.

“The speed came out this morning, we were thinking this might make it really tricky for us, where are we going to end up? But we just said we’ll trust the horse, know that he’s got the ability and we’ll just ride him cold.

“But obviously everything stayed off the rails, so he managed to improve positions and it probably just helped him settle being able to actually cruise up and then get on the back of James (McDonald on Unhinged).

“He was a bit of a nervous watch there but in the straight once he got open and you think, ‘He’s going to pick them up’.”

Waller first won the race in 2014 with Kermadec, before Comin’ Through prevailed in 2016. In 2021, It was Fangirl that was first home; Aeliana scored in 2024, then Panova triumphed 12 months ago.
