Waller colts dominate midweek meeting

Criterion’s half-brother Comin’ Through (pictured) has signalled the emergence of Chris Waller-trained colts, making up one leg of a winning treble at Warwick Farm.

The stable’s three-year-old fillies Omei Sword and Foxplay have been impressive Group Two winners this season, but it was the boys’ turn on Wednesday.

Comin’ Through’s jockey Jason Collett saved ground on the rail with his mount pulling away to win the maiden for colts and geldings (1400m) on debut.

A $12 chance, Comin’ Though held off the James Cummings-trained Potent Force ($21) who finished strongly with Show ‘Em ($10) third.

Odds-on favourite Drachenfels was fourth.

Waller was delighted to get the winner for Sir Owen Glenn who also owns Criterion and now stands him at Newgate Farm.

“We would have liked him to be up as a two-year-old, but he just needed a bit of time to mature,” Waller said.

“He was quite feminine early and he is only now starting to develop some masculinity.

“For him to do that today with 80 per cent of his body development it’s a pretty good thing.”

Criterion was a four-time Group One winner and a Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup placegetter.

Waller will now build towards the Group Three Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on October 29 which he hopes will be Comin’ Through’s third or fourth appearance at the races.

Comin’ Through was the second Waller-trained colt to win during the meeting after Veladero edged out Bridle Lane in the McGrath Estate Agents Handicap (1600m).

Waller is considering sending Veladero to the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill on September 24.

“We’ll have a look at it and maybe have a throw at the stumps seeing it’s our home track at Rosehill,” Waller said.

“That will tell us whether he’s up to that level or whether we should just be a bit more cautious but you can’t do any more.”

Group Three Ming Dynasty Quality runner-up High Mist appreciated the drop back to midweek grade.

He became the third Waller-trained three-year-old colt to win during the day, easily beating older horses in the Schweppes Handicap (1600m) after being sent out $1.60 favourite.

High Mist is also bound for the Gloaming on his way to the Group One Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick on October 8.

“He’s just a young fella whose learning his game and obviously with a bit of talent that we are starting to see now,” Waller said.

“He was very unlucky not to have won last start and it’s good to get a victory on the board today.” – AAP
