Premier trainer Chris Waller will be hoping to add some additional members to his Magic Millions assault at Randwick on Saturday.
There’s no doubting Waller will hold a strong hand in the majority of the Magic Millions races on January 11 on the Gold Coast but in the next week he’s hopeful a couple of two-year-olds will put their hands up for a place in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic – a race the trainer has never won.
On Saturday, first starter Aeecee Power will attempt to push her credentials in the TAB 2YO Handicap (1200m).
The daughter of Street Boss (USA) is the winner of her two trials, both in smart fashion and bookmakers rate her a $5.50 chance, while she’s a $51 chance at Sportsbet for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
“I was a bit unsure about running her first-up over 1200m but she’s drawn a good barrier (6) and I think that’s a good enough draw to run,” Waller said.
“Ride her conservative to make sure she gets a good experience, relaxes to get the 1200m and if she can win a Magic Millions, she’s going to be a good chance on Saturday.
“She’s a nice filly, she’s trialled well and we’ll learn more about her on Saturday.”
Next week Waller will reproduce the horse that appears to be his number one seed for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic – Blondeau.
The I Am Invincible colt was luckless on debut when an impressive second behind another Magic Millions bound colt, Aim from the Snowdens stable, which lines up against Aeecee Power at Randwick on Saturday.
“We’re pushing on,” Waller said.
“I just wanted to make sure he was eating after his first run, his shins were good and his body language was good and he’s ticked all the boxes.
“I considered running him on Boxing Day but it could put us in an awkward spot with prizemoney for the Magic Millions so he will run on Saturday week.
“So, with the Magic Millions dream still alive, he will either run in the BJ McLachlan over 1200m or at Randwick on the same day over 1000m. I’m not too fussed and we will probably go with the better barrier draw.”
Another candidate for a January trip to Queensland is the progressive four-year-old mare Romani Girl which returns from a let-up in the Ranvet Benchmark 88 Handicap (1200m).
“I chose to run her in the 1200m race (over the 1400m event) because if she runs well she’ll go up to the Magic Millions for the fillies and mares race over 1300m,” Waller said.
“She’s drawn well, will get a nice run and have the last shot at them late.
“Last prep I might have gone a run too far with her and I don’t think she ran the 1700m at Flemington.
“A mile might pull her up so we’ve freshened her and are training her more like a sprinter and she’s going well.”
Romani Girl is priced at $10 and will be ridden by Kerrin McEvoy while Glen Boss takes the reins aboard Aeecee Power. – Racenet.com.au
