Tough stayer My Giuliano dismissed any doubts about his ability at 2200m on a really heavy track when he won at Doomben on Saturday.
My Giuliano had run a course record when winning at Doomben over 20204m two weeks ago but had never won at 2200m.
After drifting to $5 in the betting My Giulinao beat Outraged ($8) by 3/4 length in the Evian hcp (2200m).
Doomben was soaked by more than 25mm of rain in just over an hour on Saturday morning and his stable mate The Rumour File was scratched when the track was downgraded to heavy.
My Giuliano was one of six stayers sent to Chris Waller’s Gold Coast stables to concentrate on Queensland staying race.
Waller’s Queensland stable foreman Paul Shailer said the rain had put a real dampener on the stable’s hopes for My Giuliano.
“He has won on wet tracks but I don’t think he is as adept on heavy tracks. But he is a fit horse and in form so he has won today,” Shailer said.
“We will have to have a look around for more staying races for him before the handicapper gets him.”
Winning jockey Michael Cahill said My Giuliano had travelled well throughout and had the field covered at the 200m.
“He is fit and that told when they run seven seconds (2.21.6) outside the class record,” Cahill said. – AAP
