Multilateral, the striking grey stayer with the powerful finishing surge, gave Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller a fourth win in the Listed $150,000 Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) at Wyong yesterday.
Waller has won the feature provincial race with Hawk Island (2010), The Verminator (2011) and Wazn (2013).
Multilateral, like Hawk Island and Wazn, is yet another tried European stayer purchased by Waller and his team to race with success in Australia.
But of his Wyong Cup winners, it was The Verminator who achieved the biggest success when defeating Hawk Island in the Group 1 The Metropolitan at Randwick three years ago.
This is the likely goal for Multilateral after he held off Canny Ballad’s late charge with another Waller-trained stayer, Secessio, third.
Sydney’s reigning premier rider, James McDonald, linked with Waller and produced a faultless ride on Multilateral.
“They have been looking for a wet track with him, well they got it today and they got a big prize,’’ McDonald said after the win.
Waller is considering a start in the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m) in two weeks and then possibly The Metropolitan at Randwick on October 4.
