Carzoff lands Cups double

Kerrin McEvoy reminded punters why he’s considered one of the world’s premier jockeys with an inspired steer to lift Carzoff to victory in Friday’s Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m).

The $3.80 favourite had a wall of horses in front of him at the 300m but McEvoy was able to drive the six-year-old through a gap before setting his sights on Auvray, who had taken the lead inside the final furlong.

The victory saw Carzoff land the Wyong Cup (2100m) – Newcastle Cup double and trainer Chris Waller could now give him a shot at one of the spring’s Group 1 staying features.

Carzoff, who isn’t nominated for either the Caulfield or Melbourne Cups, will likely target The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick and BetEasy trimmed his all-in quote for that race from $15 into $11 behind Avilius ($4), Ace High ($7) and Unforgotten ($8). – Racing.com
