Global Quest and Every Rose won the opening two-year-old races of the season with dominant efforts at Royal Randwick.
Trainer Chris Waller produced his second winner of the Group 3 $160,000 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) in three years when Global Quest stormed through the pace to score an impressive win.
The flashy Every Rose, trained by Mark Newnham, was simply too fast and too good for her rivals in the Group 3 $160,000 Gimcrack Stakes.
Both youngsters are graduates of the Magic Millions Yearling Sale and are eligible for the $2 million Magic Millions (1200m) on the Gold Coast in January.
But Global Quest, who was purchased for $340,000 as a yearling, is likely to miss the Magic Millions and be set for the $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill next March. Global Quest tops TAB’s early Slipper market at $17 ahead of Every Rose at $21.
Waller, who won the Breeders’ Plate with Performer two years ago, described Global Quest as a “natural two-year-old.’’
“We came up with a plan to not change anything with our two-year-olds and let them get to the races if they ready to trial and then make the necessary improvement,’’ Waller said.
“I was not surprised to see him jump out of the ground today. Pre-race he was coping well so all the right signs.”
Global Quest ($5.50) finished powerfully to score by a length from Postcode ($7) with Beyliks ($3.50 favourite) three quarters of a length away third.
James McDonald, rider of Global Quest, said the colt is “very smart and so professional in what he does.’’
“He’s race savvy, jumps extremely well, takes a position, relaxes and he has got a good sight about him, too. He’s a lovely colt that is going to go places,’’ McDonald said.
“Obviously this race is very important, some champion two-year-olds have won it, and hopefully this guy can go on and do it.’’
Global Quest ran the 1000m in 58.22s which was marginally quicker than what Every Rose recorded winning the Group 3 $160,000 Gimcrack Stakes (1000m). – Ray Thomas, The Daily Telegrah.
