The Chris Waller-trained Madam Rouge claimed an important black-type win when the mare staved off the challengers to score in the Group III Nivison (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday.
Four times stakes placed previously, the four-year-old daughter of Zoustar indicated she’d come back in great shape with a solid fourth behind classy gallopers The Inevitable, Fasika and Mizzy in the Silver Eagle a fortnight ago.
“Her first-up run was enormous and indicated she’d come back in really good shape,” Waller’s racing manager Charlie Duckworth said.
“Noel Greenhalgh, who’s colours she runs in, pointed out to us that in the past her second-up run had usually been her worst performance so it’s good to put that behind us today.”
And put it behind her she did, trailing the speed before moving to the front in the early part of the straight.
Reelem In Ruby ($3.70 fav) moved up to challenge ominously inside the 300m but Madam Rogue ($3.80) called on all of her reserves and resisted the challenge to score by a long-head with a long-neck back to Ready To Prophet ($10) in third.
“She’s been a good consistent mare that has probably deserved more than what she had achieved prior to today,” Duckworth said.
“That was a pretty good effort and she’s probably come back a bit better horse than she was in the past so hopefully she can go on with it.
“We’ll have a look at what races are around in the coming weeks and try to find another suitable target.”
The newly created Group II $500,000 Hot Danish Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill in two weeks would appear the ideal target.
Madam Rogue’s winning jockey Brenton Avdulla added, “She gave me a great ride. She just wanted to over race a fraction.
“Today from where we drew Chris just wanted me to tuck in behind the speed. I thought it could work out if nothing kicks up underneath me.
“When I was able to find the fence I thought it was race over. She was challenged at the furlong but had that bit of class.” – Racenet.com.au
