Autumn Boy emulates dad in Guineas

Chris Waller had been on the lookout for a colt by The Autumn Sun which reminded him of his sire and that’s why he purchased Autumn Boy.

Now the pair are both Caulfield Guineas winners after Autumn Boy emulated his sire with his victory at Caulfield on Saturday, which Waller said made the victory even more special.

“We had been looking to try and find a horse that replicates The Autumn Sun and bloodstock agent Guy Mulcaster found him,” Waller said. “As soon as I saw him I thought he was perfect and Charlie (Duckworth) was the same and we found some great owners.

“We’re proud of all the horses that come through the stable. But when we’ve got champions like The Autumn Sun and we’ve got his sons and daughters, it’s pretty special. Last week, Autumn Glow, now it’s a super colt with Autumn Boy; it’s pretty special.”

In taking out the Caulfield Guineas, Autumn Boy also became The Autumn Sun’s first colt to win a Group 1 race, with his other four winners at that level – Autumn Glow, Autumn Angel, Coco Sun and Vibrant Sun – all being fillies.

Autumn Boy is in the third crop of horses by The Autumn Sun and the result also continued a unique lineage as The Autumn Sun’s sire, Redoute’s Choice, also won the Caulfield Guineas in 1999.

Just as The Autumn Sun didn’t run in the Cox Plate, Waller suggested it is unlikely Autumn Boy will do so against his stablemate Via Sistina at The Valley on October 25.

The win gave Waller his fourth victory in the Caulfield Guineas and also gave triumphs in the race to Waller and jockey Damian Lane, who combined to win with Private Life last year.

Waller said he wasn’t concerned by Autumn Boy’s last-start seventh in the G1 Golden Rose as it was run in course-record time.
