When He’s Your Man won last year’s Kingston Town Stakes, Chris Waller changed tack and took him on to win the Epsom, but that will not happen with Silverball following his strong win at Rosehill on Saturday.

Waller knows he has a stayer on the rise at the right time of the year.

“He’s Your Man was more dynamic in winning that race last year, and was better suited at the mile. This bloke took the length of the straight to get there and is looking for 2400 metres,” Waller said after the Kingston Town.

The flashy grey was strong and reliant as he scored under the top weight of 58 kilograms by a half length from fellow imports Maurus and Foundry, which was a long head back in third.

Silverball arrived at Waller’s yard from Hong Kong with a bit of advice from his trainer in the racing mecca.

“He looks a stayer, he has it written all over him and was sent to me from Hong Kong by leading trainer Tony Millard with that in mind,” Waller said. “He mentioned Caulfield, Melbourne Cups so obviously thinks he is a 2400m-plus horse. The Metropolitan is a little bit easier than those races.

“He has still got a bit of improvement there and three weeks to the Metrop will be perfect for him.”

The win gave Brenton Avdulla a double in the first two races after he got the bob on Herne’s Oak to beat the Waller-trained Dance Of Heroes in the opener. He said his task was easy on Silverball.

“I just rode him like he was the best horse in the race and kept out of trouble,” Avdulla said. “He is very strong and gives the feel like he will run the 2400m without a problem.”

The TAB made Silverball the $8 favourite for the Metropolitan, which might have robbed runner-up Maurus of a start in the group 1. – Source ‘- Sydney Morning Herald
