Chris Waller pleased Vanbrugh finds form

Trainer Chris Waller said he couldn’t put his finger on why one-time smart galloper Vanbrugh had lost interest in racing but was elated that the four-year-old had come back to form by winning Saturday’s Coongy Cup at Caulfield.

And Waller believes now that several options are open for the stallion, with the trainer mindful that group 1 victories are important for a later stud career.

Waller said he would now look west to the Kingston Town Stakes and the Railway Stakes as group 1 possibilities.

“We could look at the MacKinnon Stakes later in the spring but while it’s worth $2 million, it won’t be easy to win. But this horse, when he’s right, is a very classy galloper,” Waller said.

Vanbrugh loomed as the horse to beat in the closing stages when he wrestled the lead away from Tom Melbourne who was courageous in defeat. – Pat Bartley, SMH
