Three-year-old colt D’Argento remains undefeated in three starts after an impressive return to racing at Randwick on Saturday.
The grey son of So You Think had not been sighted since two wins during the winter last year but handled 1300m first-up with aplomb.
Rider Hugh Bowman astutely waited until as late as possible to call upon D’Argento ($2.30 fav) in the home straight, bursting through an opening at the 200m mark to nab the leader Shumookh ($5.50) by a neck, with a margin of almost three lengths back to the third-placed Wooshka ($5.50).
“It was a nice patient ride by Hugh, he came through them and the colt did everything we wanted to see first-up,” trainer Chris Waller said.
Waller is deliberately ahead of schedule with D’Argento, in the hope the colt will have a fitness edge when the more established of his generation return in autumn features like the Group II Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 27.
“We probably won’t see him until the Hobartville and then two weeks into the Randwick Guineas or if we’ve got other nice three-year-olds there’s also the option of the Australian Guineas in Melbourne,” Waller said.
“He’s definitely a miler. Especially the way he settled in the first part of the race.”
