ChrisWaller maintained his perfect record in Queensland Oaks’ run at Doomben when Youngstar nailed stablemate Another Dollar to win a messy Group 1 on Saturday.
In a race that chopped and changed, Kerrin McEvoy maintained his composure on the easing favourite, who he paid great credit to for overcoming adversity in the run.
“I made a decision at the mile to pop out and get on the back of Aloisia, then the Kiwi horse (Terra Sancta) was outside me and they pushed on and left me without cover, so it was a case of having to sit and suffer,” he said.
“Then they came at me from the 800m, I didn’t want to be going then, so I again had to sit and suffer. She got bumped around on the corner and it was a tough effort to pick up and get going again.
“There was plenty of jostling on the corner and full credit to my filly, she regained composure on straightening up and finished with a flourish after having an uneasy time.
“She’s taken on a new level as she’s got out in trip, so the sky’s the limit.”
Waller won the 2015 Oaks with Winx and last year’s with Egg Tart in the only three times it’s been run at Doomben in the race’s 150-year history.
“She’s a very talented horse. Kerrin never panicked, kept her balanced and once she got out in clear air, she really set sail,” Waller said.
“She’s come through the provincial races, she came here two weeks ago for an impressive Group 2 win.
“Today’s win was something different, it was a bit like a bicycle race the way they were changing positions. She’s gone from the perfect spot one off the fence, then she was shunted three, four wide, so she needed all of her qualities to come back on the line.”
Another Dollar’s rider Glyn Schofield offered no excuses.
“I made life really difficult for Kerrin. Sort of flushed him out wide, I followed him, I went around him and he was forced to be held up and I went for home,” he said.
“He still come back to beat me so I can’t really complain that I got beat because if the winner had fair luck, it beats me comfortably, (but) she ran a super race.”
Co-trainer Mathew Ellerton lamented another hard luck story for Sheezdashing.
“We were in a good spot but then we ended up in not such a good spot and we conceded too much ground,” he said. – Nathan Exelby, The Sunday Mail
