Waller veteran back to his best in ATC Cup

Earlier this week Chris Waller talked to Racenet about the old stagers in his yard and the enjoyment they provide to their owners – on Saturday it was Alward’s turn to be the stable hero when scoring easily in the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill.

Prior to winning at the Gold Coast back in August, it was almost two years since the seven-year-old gelding had won a race and since then, the imported galloper won again at Doomben last start before Saturday’s victory.

“It has been a while between drinks I guess you could say but he found winning form in Queensland and he has come down in great condition,” Waller said.

“The change of scenery for a horse keeps them interested and Hugh Bowman gave him a beautiful ride.

“It is hard to explain when you switch horses and how it invigorates a horse.

“There is no doubt they have the ability to race in this grade but I think they go through the motions a little bit and need things to go their way.”

Alward ($7) defeated his stablemate Black On Gold ($5.50) by 1-3/4 lengths with Tamarack ($31) a short-half-head back in third. The $3.20 favourite House Of Cartier disappointed, finishing 10th after having every chance.

“Chris has done a great job to get him back in form, obviously has tinkered with things with him and that’s two wins in a row now so it’s working, winning rider Hugh Bowman said.

Waller said the Summer Cup on Boxing Day will be the next target for Alward.

“There is the Christmas Cup in between but I don’t think he really gets 2400m,” he said. – Racenet.com.au
