Kolding fulfills potential to win Queensland Guineas

Chris Waller has always held a high opinion of Kolding but it took the ultimate gear change to get the best out of him.

The Ocean Park gelding is destined for big things and chalked up the best win of his career with an impressive victory in the Group II Ascot Green Queensland Guineas (1600m) at Eagle Farm.

Kolding ($2.80 fav) came from the back of the field to storm down the outside and run down Baccarat Baby ($14) to win by by half a length as the luckless Pohutukawa ($5) rocketed home for third.

The black type success was Kolding’s first and Waller believes gelding the three-year-old has helped him fulfil his potential.

“It’s been the turning curve for him and since then he has won four races,” Waller said.

“Prior to that he had the ability but he didn’t want to be a race horse.

“He wasn’t (too much of a colt). He was actually a horse that was a bit of a hermit and he wasn’t really vocal or anything like that.

“That are all done for different reasons. You try them to keep them as colts but it has been the making of this horse.

“I don’t think you’ve seen the last of him and I think he is a horse to follow through the spring.”

James McDonald was on fire early, winning three of the first five races on Signore Fox, Invincibella and Kolding.

Kolding was undoubtably the most important of the trio and the Kiwi hoop showed his class with a patient ride from the back.

He sat in the back half of the field but towed Kolding into the race at the vital time to help Waller claim an early double.

“He’s a horse that’s really found his race craft, I was able to just sit on quietly on him throughout the run he didn’t spend a penny and that showed in the finish.”

“When I asked him for an effort over that last couple of hundred he kept responding, he’s in winning form and knew where the line was.” – Racenet.com.au
