Everest-bound mares Arcadia Queen and Enticing Star took another step towards next month’s $14 million race with head-turning trials at Canterbury on Monday.

Kingston Town Stakes winner Arcadia Queen settled at the rear of the field in her 900-metre trial before working to the line powerfully under Hugh Bowman to finish on the heels of Ready To Prophet and Champagne Cuddles.

Now in the care of Chris Waller, the daughter of Pierro secured Star Casino’s slot in The Everest shortly after relocating from Perth earlier this year.

Stablemate Enticing Star was just as impressive in her 900-metre hit-out, edging out Trekking and Vivi Valentina under light riding from James McDonald.

A winner of eight of her 10 career starts and runner-up in last year’s Winterbottom Stakes (1200m), Enticing Star will race on Waller’s own ticket in The Everest.

Waller is expected to split Arcadia Queen ($11 for The Everest with BetEasy) and Enticing Star ($17 for The Everest with BetEasy) when they race first-up, with the G2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m), G2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) and G2 The Shorts (1100m) among several options.

Meanwhile, several other Everest contenders feature among the entries Saturday’s G3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick, including two-time defending champion Redzel, star mare Sunlight, Pierata and Nature Strip, who is yet to secure a slot for the race. – Racing.com
