Chris Waller won each of the four Group 1 races run across Sydney and Melbourne on Saturday, but it was one of his beaten brigade who could provide his biggest payday of the Spring Carnival.
Finche, who was narrowly beaten by stablemate Kings Will Dream in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, consolidated his place towards the head of Melbourne Cup betting and is now favourite for the Caulfield Cup.
Waller confirmed on RSN927’s Correct Weight that the $5 million 2400-metre handicap at Caulfield on October 19 would be his next start.
“He’s tracking nicely,” Waller said. “That was exactly what we hoped for, a good run from him yesterday now stepping up to, I guess, the 2400-metre Caulfield Cup and then the Melbourne Cup.
“He’s like a big, lanky basketballer. He’s getting plenty of attention with his racing style and the heart that he’s putting into his racing.
“It’s good for us to have a horse well up in the market.”
Finche, a six-year-old son of Frankel, has 54kg in the Caulfield Cup, for which he is $9 equal favourite with Mer De Glace in BetEasy’s market.
He has 54.5kg in the Melbourne Cup, in which he finished fourth last year, and is $11 second elect behind Surprise Baby.
“We saw last year as what I would call an immature horse that he ran so well finishing fourth,” he said. “He’s come up very well and I’m very happy with him at this early stage.”- Racing.com
