Triple Honour Set For Run To The Rose

Chris Waller has taken his career to a new level over the past 12 months and is looking to talented three-year-old Triple Honour to do the same.

Waller, who is based at Rosehill, was the big mover in the training ranks last season finishing a close fifth after a battle with Guy Walter and John O’Shea for third.

His season was tinged with sadness when he lost stakes winner All Black Gold after a track accident but Waller believes Triple Honour can step up to the mark.

Unbeaten in three starts as a two-year-old, the colt did not take on the best of the juveniles and will face his biggest test yet in Saturday’s Group Three Run To The Rose (1300m) at his home track.

He will warm up for his assignment in a barrier trial on Tuesday.

“It will be four weeks between runs so he needs a trial to sharpen him up,” Waller said.

“He will trial on Tuesday and run on Saturday.

“I’ve done that with two horses lately and they have both won.

“We want to teach him to relax so he will have a quiet trial and won’t be fully tested.”

At his most recent start, Triple Honour scored a decisive one length win over Turffontein who will line up for a rematch on Saturday.

While the $1 million Golden Rose on September 1 is on Triple Honour’s program, Waller is looking further ahead to the Gloaming Stakes and Group One Spring Champion Stakes.

All Black Gold won the 2006 Group Three Gloaming (1800m) and was a close second to Teranaba in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

Bart Cummings will start Kroner in the Run To The Rose and is looking to have three runners in the Golden Rose two weeks later.

Occurrence scored her second career win at Randwick on Saturday, while Mimi Lebrock was a close runner-up to Sliding Cube in the San Domenico Stakes after getting a long way back early.

Although she has earned more than $660,000, much of Mimi Lebrock’s prize money is from her victory in the restricted Magic Millions Classic in January and does not count towards Golden Rose qualification.

Mimi Lebrock missed the Golden Slipper because of that and Cummings was unsure whether she would run again before the Golden Rose or whether to rely on natural attrition to get into the 16-horse field.

“We’ll just wait and see what happens,” Cummings said.

Kroner, who won a maiden at Randwick last month, tuned up for Saturday’s assignment with a win in a barrier trial at Warwick Farm on Friday.
