McCreery takes aim at Epsom

Sydney's premier trainer Chris Waller is following a proven formula with talented McCreery as he closes in on a fourth successive win in the $1 million Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

Waller ended speculation about McCreery’s Group 1 target at Royal Randwick on October 1 when he entered the last-start Kingston Town Stakes winner for the Epsom and not the $750,000 The Metropolitan (2400m) run the same day.

McCreery is now poised to emulate the feat of former stablemate He’s Your Man who won the Kingston Town Stakes-Epsom double two years ago.

Waller, who has also won the Epsom with Boban (2013) and Winx (2015), has nine of the 37 Epsom entries taken yesterday including the surprise nominations of outstanding three-year-old fillies Omei Sword and Foxplay.

Omei Sword, winner of the Silver Shadow Stakes and runner-up in the Golden Rose, and Foxplay, who has won the Furious Stakes and Tea Rose Stakes this spring, are expected to be nominated for the Group 1 $500,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) on Epsom Day.

Waller will be banking on Torgersen and Cosmic Cube pressing their Epsom claims when they contest the Group 2 $175,000 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

The Shannon nominations have been extended after only eight entries were received on Monday including Epsom hopefuls Old North, Entirely Platinum and Hi World.

There are 27 entries taken for The Metropolitan with Waller having seven stayers in the mix including the highly promising Antonio Giuseppe, who is chasing a fourth consecutive win in the Group 3 125,000 Queen’s (Colin Stephen) Cup on Saturday. -
